Hunan University of Science & Technology (HNUST), started with Northern Hunan Construction College founded in 1949 and established in 2003 by merging Xiangtan Engineering College and Xiangtan Normal College, has been developed into an institution of higher education co-constructed by People’s Government of Hunan Province and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and by the People's Government of Hunan Province and State Administration of Work Safety, and is on the list of 100 universities supported by National Basic Ability Construction Project of Western and Central China in the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan.

The campus area is 3,107 mu (207.2 hectares) with a building area amounting to 1,100,000 m² and boasts teaching and researching equipment worth 530 million yuan and a library collection of 5,709,400 volumes. Made up of 19 schools, the College of Continuing Education, the International Education School and Xiaoxiang College (an independent college), HNUST offers 90 undergraduate programs in eleven disciplines, three post-doctoral research stations of First-Level Discipline, 4 First-Level disciplines leading to PhD, 25 First-Level disciplines offering master’s degree, 8 professional master's degree authorization programs, as well as the qualification for recommending excellent fresh graduates to pursue a master's degree without an examination and the recommending qualification for “Countryside Teachers with Master Degree Training Program”. It also provides 3 characteristic disciplines of national defense, 1 characteristic and advanced key discipline at the provincial level, 8 provincial key disciplines, 8 national characteristic specialties, 17 provincial characteristic specialties and 1 experimental specialty of national comprehensive reform in specialties.
These programs are made available by 1,619 faculty members out of 2,406 employees, 279 of whom are full professors and 866 are doctorate holders. Among the outstanding faculty members are subject-matter experts of National 863 Program, leading talents in philosophy of the social science of “National High-level Personnel of Special Support Project”, talents of “The Four Fist-batch Talents Project”, national young and middle-aged experts with remarkable contributions, national candidates for “The New Century Talents Project”, national distinguished teachers, recipients of special government allowances of the State Council and candidates for “New Century Talent Supporting Project” of Education Ministry of China, amounting to about 30.
As for now, HNUST enjoys a nationwide first-batch enrollment of over 27,483 full-time undergraduates, along with 2,631 post-graduates and 5,755 students of Xiaoxiang College. HNUST also hosts these resources to guarantee quality education: 1 national teaching team, 7 provincial teaching teams, 2 state-level demonstration centers for laboratory teaching, 1 state-level virtual simulation laboratory teaching center, 1 off-campus practice base sponsored by “Excellency Project” of Education Ministry of China, 45 province-level platform for practical teaching and 39 excellent courses, key courses and high-quality courses at the provincial level. Since the beginning of the country’s 12th Five-Year Plan, HNUST has presided over more than 160 projects on teaching research and reform at the provincial level or above, and won 73 teaching achievement awards with 3 at the national level and 70 at the provincial level. All these has made HNUST a university selected in Undergraduate Teaching Level Evaluation by Education Ministry of China, included in “The Outstanding Engineers Education Program” by Education Ministry of China, listed as the first national typical university in experience of innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as the national typical university in experience of the employment of graduates.
HNUST believes in a vibrant academic life. Endorsing and rewarding this faith are 36 innovation platforms with 27 for natural science at both national and provincial level and 9 for social science at the provincial level, and 548 national research projects funded by China’s 863 Program, 973 Program, National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation and so on. The university has reaped 107 achievement awards in scientific research at both provincial and national level and 811 national patents and software copyrights, and promoted 85 new technologies. HNUST is home to two academic journals: Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Natural Science Edition), Journal of Hunan University of Science and Technology (Social Sciences Edition), which are both included in A Guide of the Core Journal of China and the latter of which is listed in the widely-acclaimed Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) and the Top 100 National Social Science Journals. Moreover, the university led the development of the "manatee" deep-sea multi-purpose drilling rig for a depth of 60 meters, which makes China’s deep-sea drilling rig technology rank among the top in the world.
To further enhance such academic vitality with a global vision, HNUST has willingly opened her door to the outside world. Up till now, the university has cooperated with dozens of universities in over 10 countries and regions, such as the United States, Britain, Russia, Germany, Japan, Korea, as well as Taiwan of China, and has already enrolled international students from 26 countries. Besides, teachers and students have been sent regularly to study in overseas universities, or to teach Chinese abroad.
